Resume is first important thing to make, while hunting a job. We are either asked to submit our resume on the employer’s website or to email it. And then luckily we are shortlisted for the first round of interview, but sometimes, unfortunately we are not shortlisted for the interview. There might be many reasons behind this. May be your skill didn’t match, you are under or over-qualified, age, or your resume didn’t looked promising enough. So the questions arises what to and what not to include in the resume. Sometimes I get questions from my friends – How to make a good resume? So I thought to write this post, which can help everyone. Few points which should be considered while writing the resume are:
1. Professional
Make your resume look professional, which includes the information which is needed, cut out the redundant information. Every sentence you use should serve a good selling point to catch the attention of the employer.
2. Keep it short
Resume should be considered as a carrier marketing tool not an autobiography. Don’t make it more comprehensive by writing stories of your previous experiences just to make it lengthier. But at the same time include all your work experiences and accomplishments in short, since you started your carrier.
3. Discard that old fashion objective statement
Unless you are sure that your chance of getting shortlisted is less, you should avoid writing that objective statement. Instead use something new which can reflect your interest in job role and company you are applying for.
4. Keep it simple and use stand-out format
Always try to keep your resume simple, never use jargons. Don’t copy the resume of your friends, maybe he/she might have copied from somewhere else. And no one likes to see the same things repeatedly, so do some modifications even if you are copying it from somewhere.
5. Accuracy of information
Whatever you are including in the resume should be 100% true. Most of companies have strict rules, when it comes to background verification. You might try to fool the companies, but sometimes you may fool yourself (losing the job) if you get caught.
6. Chronological Order and formatting
Always use same formatting in whole the resume and highlight the important things, but never overdo it. Follow the descending order of mentioning your experiences.
7. Hobbies and interests
Be careful while mentioning your extracurricular and hobbies, because some interviewer concentrate more on this things. And having insufficient or no knowledge of those things can prove you false during interview. I remember one of my friend mentioned reading as a hobby although it was a foreign land for him and unfortunately he was asked question about this hobby and books, which he couldn’t answer because he never read a single book in his life. So mention the honest hobbies and activities which you are genuinely indulged in.
