Happiness in little things – Seagulls in Stockholm.

Today was just another typical summer day in Stockholm, I was caught up in the usual chaos from the morning. However, something extraordinary happened while I was having a solitary coffee on the beautiful terrace at the office. I intentionally seek out alone time a few times a month, which helps me gain clarity and reflect on recent days, fostering a sense of self-awareness.

As I pondered, I noticed a few energetic seagulls performing daring stunts and acrobatic moves as they flew back and forth from the office terrace to the roof of the lakeside restaurant next door. In that moment, I was mesmerized by their flight. They flapped their wings for a few seconds before gliding smoothly, with their wings stretched straight like an airplane, effortlessly maintaining a steady speed. The sight was a vivid reminder of the beauty in nature’s simple, yet extraordinary, moments.
Have you ever observed a bird taking flight? Of course you have, but have you ever patiently watched them as they begin to fly and then land?

In our fast-paced world, where the constant rush often blinds us to the simple pleasures around us, the joy of little things can serve as a soothing remedy for the soul. Among these small, often overlooked delights is the simple act of watching a bird in flight. This seemingly mundane activity can offer profound moments of beauty, inspiration, and tranquility.

Observing a bird in flight connects us to the natural world in a unique and intimate way. As the bird soars, dips, and glides, it embodies the essence of freedom and grace. This connection to nature can be grounding, reminding us of the larger ecosystem of which we are a part. It’s a reminder that, despite our complex lives, we share this world with creatures that live with a simplicity and directness that can be both humbling and inspiring. Each seagull had its unique style some flap energetically, others glide serenely, and some performed acrobatic maneuvers that left me in awe. The fluidity and elegance of their flight can be mesmerizing, offering a visual poetry that speaks directly to our hearts.

I am very thankful to live this moment of watching the birds in flight, it provided me a much-needed pause. It allowed me a slowness, and a chance to take deep breathe and simply be present. Such small act of mindfulness can have a very calming effect, reducing stress and helping to refocus our minds. It was a gentle reminder that there is more to life than our immediate concerns and that serenity can be found in the simplest of things.

I recall the delight my child experiences when he unexpectedly spots an animal or bird. As we grow older, we tend to take nature and the world around us for granted, forgetting the joy it brought us when we first discovered it in our childhood. The joy of watching a bird in flight is a powerful testament to the beauty and wonder of the small things in life. It is an activity that connects us with nature, showcases the beauty of movement, offers a pause amidst chaos, helps us rediscover childlike wonder, and inspires creativity. In a world that often emphasizes the grand and the impressive, it’s the small things, like the flight of a bird, that can sometimes bring the deepest joy and happiness to our soul.
